How to Get Free Access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, Image Generation, and More in Google AI Studio

How to Get Free Access to Gemini 2.5 Pro

Hey everyone!

I wanted to explore one of my favorite AI tools today: Google AI Studio. Ever wanted a tool that gives you access to the most powerful LLMs, can generate incredible images, complete complex tasks through reasoning, and understand Youtube videos and your personal files? Well you’re in luck— because Google AI Studio has it all and for the incredibly low price of completely free! Whether you’re just exploring AI tools for the first time or have been a developer for years, AI studio definitely has what you need. AI Studio lets you explore the latest Google models without needing any technical expertise. Let’s dive in!

What exactly is Google AI Studio?

Google AI Studio is a customizable environment where you can experiment with Google’s newest and most advanced AI models for free. Fifteen unique models are currently available on the platform including Google’s new Gemini 2.5 Pro and 2.5 Flash preview models.

If you aren’t a developer and feel like AI Studio isn’t for you, wait! In my experience, Google AI Studio is still an excellent platform for people looking to have a traditional chatbot experience. Often Google will roll out their Gemini updates on AI Studio weeks before releasing them on the Gemini App. You’ll have access to features like video streaming, image generation / editing, audio streaming, reasoning mode, and so much more. I’ve been using AI Studio every day for months and can confidently say that it’s a great platform that can be as simple or complex as you make it.

Who is Google AI Studio for?

The short answer is: anyone. This platform is unique because it allows people of varying experience levels to explore Google’s latest LLMs. Many users like myself have been using AI Studio simply to access Google’s latest models in a free, easy-to-use interface. Developers on the other hand may be experimenting within AI Studio before transitioning to the Gemini API. In other words, Google AI Studio was built for developers but has great potential for more casual AI users

Why you should be using AI Studio

So, why should you bother with AI Studio when there are tons of alternatives out there? Plenty of reasons!

  • It’s Completely Free: It’s completely free to use—no credit card or trial period needed. Just sign in and start creating. This lowers the barrier of entry to virtually zero and if you decide it isn’t for you, you can just move on.

  • Access to Top Models: You get direct access to the most powerful models currently available like Gemini 2.5 Pro, 2.5 Flash, and more. LMSYS still shows these models at the top of their leaderboards.

  • New Features: While AI Studio wasn’t designed to showcase Google’s newest features before they appear anywhere else, the platform is constantly being updated to showcase previews of new features.

  • Rapid Prototyping: Got an idea for how AI can help? You can test it out in seconds in AI Studio, iterating on your prompts until you get the desired result.

  • Intuitive UI: One thing I always look for is a clean and easy to navigate interface. AI Studio has a ton of customization options that are neatly tucked away yet simple to find.

  • Model Selection: As I mentioned earlier, AI Studio offers fifteen unique models that can easily be selected. Whether you need to create images or get a detailed summary of an hour long YouTube video, simply select the model that best fits your use case.

  • Token Count (Context Window): One of the main reasons I use the Gemini models is their massive context window. Not only does AI Studio incorporate their context window, it also gives you an accurate token count for your conversations.

While there’s a lot to unpack here, we’ll explore this page in detail in the next section.

Interface Overview

The UI for AI Studio might seem complex at first but it’s actually much simpler than it appears. Many of the features can be broken into two groups, basic features for everyone and advanced features for developers. We’ll be looking at the basic features here. I’ll be putting out a separate guide in the coming days for the developer focused features.

Several important features have been highlighted here.

In the image above, I’ve highlighted seven core features that we’ll go over here.

  • Creating New Chats (Red): You can create a new chat / conversation by clicking this button. Each new chat will have no past knowledge or system instructions.

  • Chat History (Yellow): Chat history will store all previous conversations. You can quickly reopen and continue a chat using this tool.

Here we can see Google AI Studio’s Chat History.

  • Prompt Gallery (Orange): If you’re looking at these features and still not sure what you can actually create, check out Google’s prompt gallery. Their gallery includes 35 unique prompts that showcase what can be accomplished with Google’s Gemini models and Google AI Studio.

  • Model Selection (Purple): One of AI Studio’s most important features is model selection. Using this menu, you can choose which model you want to interact with. In other words, you can use any Gemini model for free through Google AI Studio.

The Model Selection is part of “Run setting” in the top right corner.

  • Streaming in real time (Green): One of the coolest new features to AI Studio is the “Stream” feature. You can share your camera and desktop with the Gemini and allow it to “see” whatever you need help with.

  • Multimodal Uploads (Pink): You can connect AI Studio directly to your Drive storage or upload images, videos, and other files.

  • Chat Window (Center Screen): The last and most obvious UI element to cover is the central chat window. This is where you can actually have your conversations with Gemini. This interaction mirrors other chatbots like Claude and ChatGPT.

Creating Your First Chat

Now that we know how to navigate the interface, let’s look at an example of AI Studio in action. In this short sample, we’ll be uploading and interacting with a Youtube video.

Google AI Studio allows us to upload YouTube videos.

Let’s start by explaining what we want the model to do and sharing the link to the YouTube video I want to interact with.

Next we’ll want to select a model that best fits our needs. In this case, we also need to consider the size of the context window. If you look at the right side of the screen, you can see that we are using 1.3 million tokens. This means that we need to use a model with a large context window that can understand this large amount of data.

AI Studio gives us a summary of the YouTube video we shared.

As you can see from the above image, the model was able to understand the contents of the video and provide a short summary. I’ll next take this a step further and ask some specific questions about what was covered in the video.

Here we ask AI Studio a question about the video we uploaded.

Again, the Gemini model is able to correctly answer the questions based on the video’s content.

Use Cases

Now that we’ve got our first example working, let’s cover some additional use cases for Google AI Studio.

Here are a few beginner-friendly examples:

  • Personal Tutor: Given the massive context window of the Gemini models, you can share videos, images, notes, and materials about a topic and have Gemini either explain the content to you or create a unique study plan.

  • Writing Help: I’m often using Google AI Studio to help with my writing process. Both the brainstorming and editing phase can be helped greatly by AI tools. This is especially helpful for people who struggle with the initial outlining stage like I do.

  • Image Generation: The latest Gemini models are great for creating images. I find that being able to iteratively improve an image or idea without limits has helped me get more comfortable making images. I also love that I can create custom images for my articles without having an art background.

  • Drafting Email and Posts: Whether creating emails for daily occurrences or job interviews, AI Studio can quickly create content that follows your styling and tone preferences. It can also help with generating social media posts that will maximize reach and engagement.

  • Summarizing Articles / Research: One of my most common use cases for Google AI Studio is summarization of complex articles and topics. I’m not someone who enjoys reading technical or academic writing so I often opt to read summaries and ask follow up questions.

Conclusion

Google AI Studio has become one of my core AI tools because of its versatility and power. Whether I need a personalized writing editor that has access to all my previous work or want to generate and edit an image, AI Studio is the tool I’m constantly coming back to. The fact that it’s also free for everyone makes it something I’d recommend everyone try. Most importantly, AI Studio is constantly evolving. Already the new features mentioned last week at Google I/O have been added for all users.
